The joint NZ Transport Agency and Road Transport Forum workshop series to reduce truck rollover is proving a hit, with strong interest coming from the industry.
Over the next few months dozens of Rollover Prevention Safer Journeys workshops are being held around the country to help drivers and those who work in the industry understand why rollovers occur and how to prevent them.
“The Road Transport Forum is determined to do everything we can to provide drivers, operators and loaders with the best information available to help prevent truck rollover and present the range of factors affecting heavy vehicle stability and handling performance,” says Chief Executive Ken Shirley.
On average a truck rolls over every two to three days on New Zealand roads, a statistic which is double the OECD average on a per capita basis.
In addition to the tragedy of death and serious injury that can result from truck rollovers, there are also significant economic losses from vehicle damage, product loss, network and supply chain disruption costs the freight industry and the country millions of dollars each year.
“It’s great to see the industry embracing this workshop series,” says Harry Wilson, Freight Portfolio Director at the Transport Agency. “Working together we can solve this issue of Truck Rollover and make our roads safer for all motorists”.
The Rollover Prevention Safer Journeys workshops discuss the fundamentals of vehicle stability and how it is affected by the size and type of load and other factors such as the nature of the road and weather conditions.
