The Transport Agency believes it is important that electric vehicle drivers feel confident to roam across New Zealand’s state highways.
In April 2017, we set a vision for:
- Nationwide coverage of fast/ rapid DC charging stations every 75kms across our state highways
- Supplemented by a network of AC charging stations every 50km across our state highways, and collector routes.
Progress towards these targets
The Transport Agency has established a baseline of existing infrastructure and will actively manage progress towards the targets set down in our vision.
The following maps are a view of current state of the nationwide network.
If you know of public charging infrastructure, not included in our maps, that meets the requirements above, and services our national, regional and arterial state highways, contact the EV programme with details.
Minimum requirements for the nationwide network
- It must be safe:
- Minimum Mode 3 or Mode 4 charger
- Designed and intended for use by the general public
- Endorsed and sign-posted by the road controlling authority
- It must be reliable:
- Monitored for reliability by the charging operator
- Available (ideally 24/7) for use by the general public
- It must be interoperable:
- DC – Must have Chademo & CCS Type 2 connectors
- AC – Type 2 socket
- Universal payment system
The charging stations must also be located within reasonable proximity of the roads in question.
Taking a journey focus
The Transport Agency strongly encourages investors to work together to achieve connected journeys along national, regional and arterial roads.
Setting charging infrastructure priorities
The One network road classification system can be used as a tool to identify priority journeys, so that the roads that deliver the greatest benefits are addressed first.
This system takes into account the quantity of people and goods that move along the road and has been jointly developed by road controlling authorities. It is a prioritisation system that also considers the social and economic value of a road.
Please contact the EV programme if you would like to discuss this further.
