New Zealand’s public charging network

New Zealand’s network of public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is currently in the establishment stage. Most of the existing infrastructure is based in urban areas and currently there is not enough coverage for a "national network".

While investors have installed both fast and slow charging stations, the majority of public charging stations are slow charge.

Slow charge stations are usually non-metered and non-monitored sockets. Some fast charge stations have their own payment systems.

Find out about what is being achieved overseas here.

New Zealand has an opportunity

As investors continue to install public charging stations, there is an opportunity to create a cohesive national network of charging infrastructure across the urban and rural roading network that will:

  • be safe and reliable and
  • give drivers the confidence to make longer trips in electric vehicles.

In order to achieve this, NZ Transport Agency recommends that public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles:

  • uses the recommended connectors and socket outlets
    • for ‘en-route installations: Chademo and CCS Type 2 connectors/sockets for DC chargers (Mode 4) and Type 2 socket for AC chargers (Mode 3), as a minimum
    • for electrified parking: Type 2 (socket) AC charger (Mode 3), as a minimum
  • must meet all applicable NZ electrical standards
  • has universally-accessible payment methods, such as credit card systems or open billing platforms
  • is clearly sign-posted using approved symbols, signs and road markings
  • is recorded, and  kept up-to-date, on PlugShare, stating that the station complies with the Transport Agency's guidelines; and
  • has real-time monitoring to ensure its reliability.
