If this is your first application, you’ll need documentation from each country you’ve lived in for more than 12 months after the age of 14.
If you’re renewing an endorsement, you’ll need documentation from each country where you’ve spent more than 12 months since your endorsement was granted.
You’ll need to provide:
- police records of any criminal history or complaints
- traffic records of infringements or fines (this may come from a different office to the police).
If you’re converting an overseas licence or endorsement, or applying to have your overseas experience recognised, you’ll need to show your overseas licence or get a Certificate of particulars from the overseas office.
In all circumstances these documents must be current. You can send in the original hard copies (not photocopies) or you can email electronic copies of the originals in a PDF format to pvio@nzta.govt.nz. All documents must be authorised by the relevant authority (embassy, consulate or other approved government agency) and if needed, translated by a translator into English.
Getting these documents is your responsibility, at your cost, and may affect the time taken for application processing. The Transport Agency has no influence on these factors.
If you have copies of documents submitted to another New Zealand government department you may be able to use this also.
Please call us on 0800 822 422 if you have questions about having lived overseas and how it impacts your application
